His acclaimed debut album – ‘The Trio, Live’ (Nugene Records NUG401) with organist Jonny Henderson (23) and drummer Evan Jenkins (31) – is a melting pot of energetic swinging Blues and powerful funk, building upon the format of the classic American organ trios of the fifties and sixties, adding the influence of the blues guitar greats (a nod in the direction of benchmark players such as BB King, Albert Collins and Robben Ford) and mixing in funky instrumental workouts.
The result is a distinctive and highly charged sound, described by one music critic as
“astonishingly mature for such a young group of musicians”.
Paul Jones (BBC R2) on hearing the Matt Schofield Trio, said “I could be somewhere in America listening to an internationally known group, and I think they possibly will be.”
Guitarist Magazine described Matt’s guitar playing as “Dynamite” and Jonny Henderson’s organ playing as “Sensational”.
Blues Revue (published out of the USA and the world’s premiere blues magazine) labelled Matt as “a master of tone” and the CD as “greasy and grand”.
Vintage Guitar, America’s premiere six string read, listed the CD in their VG Hit List calling it “a fine record”, while Blues News in Germany describes the CD as "a reviewers dream… a real cracker, fresh and powerful."
The CD was recorded live at a single gig - no rehearsal, no retakes, no fixes, just straight to tape! That’s what these guys are about – they excel in live performance, allowing the music to develop and grow spontaneously. There’s something magical in the way the three gel, lifting one another to new heights.
Even listeners unfamiliar with blues are quickly won over by the energy. Maybe it’s the raw passion and feel of the music. Or perhaps it’s because, for just three people, they produce a huge sound, at times delivering the thick multi-layered feel of a big band. The whole thing exudes a class and depth that is not often heard these days.
