Chad and Pete first met way, way back in their teens, both playing in their first rock'n'roll bands. Years later they joined a great blues band called Shout Sister Shout! This band had been formed by guitarist Dot, formerly of Howlin' Wilf and the
Veejays.
After three great years with the Sisters, Chad left to join the hugely successful Paul Lamb and the Kingsnakes. The band split, and Pete played in several other bands. The two travelling bluesmen met occasionally on the blues circuit - like the Colne Festival.
To cut a long story short - in late 2001, Pete saw Chad playing with the Mighty Hound Dogs at the world-famous 100 Club. Soon after, Chad left that band and invited Pete to form a new outfit. Paul was recruited from the Mighty Hound Dogs, and Fox joined after meeting Pete through mutual friends.
For a while, the band's name was "Drunk'n'Homeless", after one of Chad's new songs, but this soon changed to "Breakout".
Tapes of our early rehearsals turned out better than our wildest expectations. We decided to go ahead and record an album. Pete's Bucket East Studio was due for a major upgrade starting with the addition of a seperate control room. The building delayed the start of recording for a couple of months, but it was worth the wait. The new studio was further improved towards the end of the album sessions by a new 24-track recorder.
Finally, the new album was mixed, mastered and named "Drunk'n'Homeless". Pete teamed up with Brad Day, his old friend and former band mate in The Third Eye to form a new independent record label: Congress Recordings and music publishing company Farrday Music.
At that point, in June 2002, another band called Breakout contacted the band by email, so the band was renamed "Breakout Blues". Luckily, the album masters had not yet been sent to the CD manufacturers, so the album's artwork was quickly modified.
A few promo copies of the album were made and some of these found their way to UK Bob, who presents a programme called Good Morning Blues on WRFG in Atlanta, Georgia. This led to our first airplay, and our first radio interview.
In July 2002, the final version of the album went to the manufacturers, and when the copies arrived some more promos were sent out to venues, magazines and radio stations. One of these was Jazz FM, and we were thrilled when we heard track 2, "Yours For Good" on Paul Jones's show "Jazz-Me Blues" on the morning of Saturday 27th July, giving us our first UK airplay.
The album "Drunk'n'Homeless" was launched on 28th July 2002 at our first live appearance. This took place at Mojo Boogie, which is a club held every Sunday night at the 100 Club in London's Oxford Street. The performance was well received by an enthusiastic audience which even included some Shout Sister Shout! fans.
